Applied behavior analytic interventions for children with autism: a description and review of treatment research

abab design

Specifically, the researcher waits until the participant’s behaviour in one condition becomes fairly consistent from observation to observation before changing conditions. The idea is that when the dependent variable has reached a steady state, then any change across conditions will be relatively easy to detect. Recall that we encountered this same principle when discussing experimental research more generally. The effect of an independent variable is easier to detect when the “noise” in the data is minimized. By contrasting ABA and ABAB Design, professionals in the field of behavioral analysis can determine the most suitable approach for their specific needs.

Can ABA design be used to test the effectiveness of multiple treatments on a behavior?

As a simple example how this design might work, imagine you just adopted two untrained puppies. You want to measure the effects of using a treat or biscuit versus using verbal and physical praise, so you apply the treat to Puppy 1 and the praise to Puppy 2. Measuring the number of correct responses after intervention X is withdrawn provides another opportunity to show the effect of intervention X. In our experiment, we will count the number of correct responses before we use intervention X.

What Does ADHD and Autism Look Like Together

Let's delve into what ABA therapy entails and explore the principles and techniques behind this effective intervention. In addition, the withdrawal of treatment that has begun to demonstrate success can raise both practical and ethical concerns. It may be challenging to convince caregivers and team members of the value in withdrawing the treatment. One way to overcome this challenge is to withdraw for a short duration, though this may impact your ability to demonstrate a functional relation. For a discussion on how to advocate for the use of experimentation in treatment see Caldwell (2019).

Why Internal Validity Matters in ABA and ABAB Design

Researchers measure the baseline level of behavior, introduce the intervention, and monitor the changes in behavior across different conditions. ABAB design allows for the evaluation of the intervention's effectiveness across multiple contexts, providing a comprehensive understanding of its impact. This cyclical pattern of alternating intervention and baseline phases allows for a more comprehensive evaluation of treatment effects. ABA therapy provides a structured and supportive framework for individuals with autism to thrive and reach their full potential.

In addition to greater personalization at the start of treatment, ongoing assessment and treatment tailoring can be achieved with SCDs. Hayes [77] described how parametric and component analyses can be conducted in clinical practice. Two components, or even different treatments, could be systematically introduced alone and together. If the treatments are different, such comparisons would also yield a kind of comparative effectiveness analysis.

Single-case experimental designs (SCEDs) are increasingly used in fields such as clinical psychology and educational psychology for the evaluation of treatments and interventions in individual participants. The AB phase design, also known as the interrupted time series design, is one of the most basic SCEDs used in practice. Randomization can be included in this design by randomly determining the start point of the intervention. In this article, we first introduce this randomized AB phase design and review its advantages and disadvantages.

Analyses

With a deeply passionate team and innovative technology, we’re building a world where every child can access world-class care at home, uniquely tailored to them. Each design has its own strengths and limitations, and the choice between the two depends on the specific research question and the nature of the behavior being studied. ABA therapy, which stands for Applied Behavior Analysis, focuses on teaching new skills and reducing problem behaviors by systematically applying principles of behavior. The goal of ABA therapy is to improve social, communication, and adaptive skills while reducing challenging behaviors. As per the example above, the analyst would remove the task chart and provide the child with instruction to see how they respond and if the intervention was working as it was intended to.

There are many different approaches, and single-subject researchers continue to debate which are the most useful. The mean and standard deviation of each participant’s responses under each condition are computed and compared, and inferential statistical tests such as the t test or analysis of variance are applied (Fisch, 2001)[3]. (Note that averaging across participants is less common.) Another approach is to compute the percentage of nonoverlapping data (PND) for each participant (Scruggs & Mastropieri, 2001)[4]. This is the percentage of responses in the treatment condition that are more extreme than the most extreme response in a relevant control condition.

Optimizing behavioral health interventions with single-case designs: from development to dissemination

For a clear example, interested readers are referred to Silberglitt and Gibbons’ (2005) documentation of a slope-standard approach to identifying, intervening, and monitoring reading fluency and at-risk students. Of course, the approach (relying on slope values from serially collected single-subject data) is not without its problems. Depending on the frequency and duration of data collection, the standard error of the estimate for slope values can vary widely (Christ, 2006), leading to interpretive problems for practice. Thus, consistent with all of the points made above, sound methodology (design, measurement) is the biggest determinant of valid decision making.

abab design

Multiple-baseline designs also obviate the ethical concern about withdrawing treatment (as in a reversal design) or using a placebo control comparison group (as in randomized trials), as all participants are exposed to the treatment with multiple-baseline designs. Although an assumption of independence suggests that researchers should select conditions that are clearly dissimilar from one another, the conditions must be similar enough that the effects of the independent variable can be replicated across each of them. If the multiple baselines are conducted across participants, this means that all the participants must be comparable in their behaviors and other characteristics. If the multiple baselines are being conducted across behaviors, those behaviors must be similar in function, topography, and the effort required to produce them while remaining independent of one another. The percentage of time he spent studying (the dependent variable) was low during the first baseline phase, increased during the first treatment phase until it leveled off, decreased during the second baseline phase, and again increased during the second treatment phase. By examining these real-world case studies, we can gain insights into how ABA and the ABAB Design have been effectively applied to address behavioral challenges across various populations.

RCTs do have many specific advantages related to understanding causal relations by addressing methodological issues that may compromise the internal validity of research studies. Kazdin (2010), however, compellingly argued that certain characteristics of SSEDs make them an important addition and alternative to large-group designs. He argued that RCTs may not be feasible with many types of interventions, as resources for such large-scale studies may not be available to test the thousands of treatments likely in use in any given field.
